St Helens scored 24 points as they wrapped up their home Super League campaign with a win on Huddersfield in style at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
In-form prop Luke Thompson acquired a brace while Lachlan Coote had a perfect night with the boot.
The success guaranteed without losing a game on home soil, an ominous listing which can give them enormous confidence ahead of their play-offs the regular season was finished by that the League Leaders Shield winners.
When Saints went on to win the Grand Final the last time such a feat was achieved by them was in 2002. But Huddersfield stay at risk of dropping to the Championship.
A week back, Saints were involved in the lowest scoring game in Super League history – a win over Castleford.
But it took Justin Holbrook’s side three minutes to surpass that score, Thompson after a fine pass from his fellow racing to the tryline prop Alex Walmsley. Coote, playing for the first time because the Challenge Cup Final defeat to Warrington month, added the conversion.
Dominic Peyroux had a clear run to the try line Jonny Lomax providing the killer pass after some slick Saints strategy play. Coote kicked the extras.
It was Coote who helped put the platform for Saints’ third try with a 40-20 kick. Lomax, Coote and james Roby joined to get Regan Grace in.
With three minutes of this half a break from Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook split the Huddersfield defence wide open and his pass sent Morgan Knowles off for a try that Coot goaled to get a period lead which did not flatter the house side.
The people got off the markers within three minutes of the restart when Martin Lawrence barged in for a try from close variety along with the conversion was added by Oliver Russell with the half-time team talk from Huddersfield coach Simon Woolford clearly having had the desired effect.
Coote successful with the boot and the attempt was to offer temporary respite since Saints scored their attempt in the 54th minute, Kyle Amor burrowing over.
Thompson promised his second try before Lomax added Saints’ seventh. As Huddersfield completed well beaten coote converted.
Tommy Makinson completed the scoring after taking a forward-looking pass that was from Grace at the dying minutes, Coote adding the extras.
